About Us
Our mission is to empower African women and adolescent girls through programs of self-help and health promotion, such as elementary education, local small-scale clinic operation, poultry farming, bee-keeping, weaving, maintaining pumps and wells, water transporting and other small cottage industries.
Established in 2003 by Asfaha Hadera and Kim Nichols, for over two decades the newly named Afrikin International Services has operated as the Ethiopia based arm of African Services Committee, the Organization that Asfaha founded upon his arrival in NYC in 1981. AIS now runs entirely independently of the New York office, focusing exclusively on serving the thousands of Ethiopia based clients that have come to depend on its clinics and wide array of support services..
Afrikin International Services is a multi-service human rights and health agency. Programs address the needs of newcomers affected by war, persecution, internal displacement, poverty, and other global health inequities. ASI provides disease screening and treatment, social welfare, education, nutrition, and reproductive health services to more than 5,000 women and girls in Tigray and Zeway Regions, Ethiopia.
Expanding access to HIV and TB prevention, testing, and treatment is central to African Services International’s mission. AIS has taken this work from New York to the frontlines of the global pandemic and now operates two clinics and community development centers in Ethiopia, which direct services to women and girls who have experienced sexual violence, internal displacement, and disruption of schooling as a result of civil war. The agency is committed to challenging stigma and discrimination at all levels and supporting the individuals, families, and communities most impacted by HIV. Combined with life-saving treatment, this care and support has transformed thousands of lives.
AIS’s New York office vigorously conducts fundraising to generate support for its Ethiopia programs. Through individual contributions and government and foundation grants, AIS’s New York office has supported health promotion and self reliance since AIS’s health services in Ethiopia began in 2003.
AIS’s activities include :
Engaging in fund-raising activities among individuals, communities, and family foundations, to help fund women and adolescent girls’ initiatives that will lead to self-reliance.
Promoting and activating for women's rights, help build maternal and child and reproductive health clinics to prevent maternal mortality and morbidity.
